Which setting is best, VoWifi or VoLTE and which one to choose for the best quality calls?
VoLTE
VoLTE is an acronym for Voice over LTE
LTE is the Long Term Evolution network that we call; ‘4G’.
So the meaning of VoLTE can be described as Voice calling over the 4G network. This can be seen as “4G Calling – Use 4G services to improve Voice and other communications (recommended).
The prerequisites for VoLTE – Voice calls over the 4G network are an active and 4G coverage available to the phone. Indoors 4G signals may be poor or nonexistent. No 4G signal would preclude the ability to make a VoLTE call, and the phone would typically fall back to the classic network calling service.
The advantage of making a call over the 4G (VoTLE) is that 4G has a higher bandwidth for data, leading to better call quality. Both sides will need phones to negotiate a high-quality call for this to work.
VoWiFi
Voice over wifi is a way to make calls over the wifi. This would typically be the home wifi that covers the living area in 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz wifi connectivity. The option can be shown as ‘Wifi Calling – call over wifi” in the settings.
The advantage of VoWiFi is that wifi is guaranteed at home because we rely on it for our devices. If your phone can get a good quality Wi-Fi connection at home, it can make a call over the Wi-Fi. You may not get a good mobile signal in a home due to its construction or location relative to the network masts. This is not an issue for wifi brought into the home over a broadband connection.
The problem with VoWiFi is that as soon as you leave home, you lose the wifi connection; at this point, the phone can fall back to the classic network call or 4G VoLTE, depending on your settings.
VoLTE or VoWiFi?
Which is the best to choose for calls?
This depends on whether you get a good 4G signal on your phone at home or where wifi is available. If you don’t get a good 4G signal, making calls over wifi would be a very good choice.
Remember, as soon as you leave the wifi area; the phone can revert to 4G calling if there is a 4G available. If no 4G can be found, the phone will fall back to the classic calling scheme.
Calling over wifi (VoWIFI) and calling over 4G (VoLTE) can give better quality calls if the other party has an HQ it a better quality connection.
Enable Both
If you enable both options, the phone can use wifi when there is wifi, 4G when there is 4G and classic calls when no high-speed data connection is available.
Your phone will choose the best option when data connections become available.
